Readers of books that have the word shipwrecks in
the title often have ulterior motives. I usually did. Treasure hunters
seek out the shortest route to the goodies. Archaeologists need to find
out not only where things are, but also what is known to have been done
to them over the years. Historians often need that one illusive bit of
information to drive a point across. Students require a database to draw
from to satisfy their instructor. The casual reader is often looking for
a place to put his or her imagination to play for a while. In the end
we all get drawn into that bottomless pit of information that is called
